                                                                                 The Puzzle of my Voyage

Hello world! My name is Breanna Martinez and I am 21 years old. I am currently a junior at San Jose State University, studying communication studies. I chose this as my encapsulating image because I feel like there are so many different elements of this picture that describe me as a communication scholar. First off, each puzzle piece is as equally as important as another and make up this big structure that I call life. Second, the hand putting the puzzle pieces together represents me learning more and more lessons everyday and creating how I see the world. The globe being incomplete shows that I have not yet figured it all out and I am still growing and learning day by day.
My attraction to communication studies has it’s roots in my family. I believe that this is one of the main reasons I went into communication studies, we have always been very open to two way communication where everyone has a say and we collaborate together to come up with a decision or value. They make it very comforting to know that if I have something going on in my life that I have someone to go to for a helping hand. Since I identified that this is what I wanted to study I have noticed that every part of my life involves some sort of communication. At work dealing with customers and team members or even in my own relationships. I love that what I study and learn about has a direct affect on my relationships in every aspect of life.
I see communication as a two way street between people or persons who are trying to convey and receive messages. Actual speaking or body language of one or more parties can do this.
As a communication scholar I am primarily interested in interpersonal communication and the relationships between people. I am very intrigued about the differences between people, especially in romantic relationships. It interests me to see what bothers each other, how they address and workout arguments, and what they consider to be standard in the relationship.
In Comm studies I see myself fitting in as an interpretivist because I can see multiple meanings to be true. I don’t necessarily believe that there is just one way to do things or believe in. I am open to new ideas or opinions that can affect the way I see things. Whether it changes my views or not, it helps me to open up my brain to thinking more than just what I believe to be true.
All of these ideas and different kind of communication processes help me to piece my puzzle of the world together.
Key Questions:
  • How do people create a personality?
  • How are standards made in a relationship?
  • Is changing your communication process easy
